Stem cell window in Japan

Sosei Co. Ltd. is focused on development of therapeutics via in-licensing and its internal drug re-profiling technology. But the company also sees a special window of opportunity for stem cells in Japan. Thus, the company is pursuing a joint venture model - forming Stem Cell Sciences KK with Stem Cell Sciences Ltd. Sosei believes this structure will keep its resources allocated to products, while preserving the upside from the stem cell play.

"Although we're product-oriented, stem cells have a unique local situation" in Japan, said Sosei CEO Shinichi Tamura. "The Japanese government views stem cells as a hot area and there's lots of money available in Kobe City to nurture the technology."...
