OxSyBio's 3-D printing could make tissues for drug testing, regenerative medicine

OxSyBio Ltd. is developing 3-D printing technology based on droplet networks to print tissues and tissue-like materials for drug testing and regenerative medicine. The method gives precise control over cell locations, which could improve the reproducibility and applicability of information gained from model tissues produced using 3-D cell culture or organ-on-a-chip technologies.

Founder Hagan Bayley said the idea originated from his lab's work in trying to scale down a lipid bilayer system to be able to measure ionic current across a single protein pore. The group had abandoned a chamber separated by a lipid bilayer in favor of measuring current across two small water-filled lipid droplets, which naturally form bilayers when brought together.

Bayley, a professor of chemical biology at the University of Oxford, said experiments with more droplets led to the emergence of tissue-like properties, such as communication and coordinated behavior.
