Products containing surfactant proteins B and C have reduced mortality caused by respiratory distress syndrome in premature newborns, but chronic bronchopulmonary dysplasia caused by ventilation remains a problem. Airway Therapeutics LLC has shown adding surfactant protein D to marketed products can further reduce lung inflammation in animals, and is in talks with marketers to co-develop a combination product.
