HK Pharma: This time, drugs

Hubert Koster has founded four biotech companies. The first three - Biosyntech GmbH, MilliGen/Biosearch and Sequenom Inc. - were focused developing new tools for biotech. This time around, Koster is going to try his hand at drug development. HK Pharmaceuticals Inc. has an approach to protein analysis that it believes will result in better characterized targets for drug development, with a particular focus on membrane-bound proteins.

"There are three components to our new philosophy of drug discovery and development," Koster said. "First, we're taking a top-down approach based on the fact that drugs interact with proteins, not RNA or DNA."

Second, he said, "we want an unbiased approach. We don't want to focus too early on a specific class of proteins, such as GPCRs or ion channels or kinases. Third, we will start with well-characterized samples of healthy and diseased tissues.
