SmithKline researchers published in Molecular and Cellular Neuroscience the cloning and characterization of a transmembrane aspartic protease, called Asp 2, that has the characteristics expected for the beta-secretase enzyme, which is believed to be responsible in part for cleavage of the amyloid precursor protein (APP) into beta amyloid fragments, which have been implicated in the pathology of AD.
