Spanish researchers published the ability of IGF-1 to improve symptoms in a model of cerebellar ataxia, a movement disorder caused by degeneration in the cerebellum, the brain area involved in balance and coordination. Rats with the condition, induced with a toxin, recovered complete motor control after either infusion or subcutaneous injection with the growth factor.

Neuronal survival increased from 27 percent to 92 percent, depending on the time treatment began. Less than 20 percent of the neurons survived in untreated animals. ...
