BioServe and NIEHS scientists published in Cancer Research a difference in genetic variation of the myeloperoxidase gene between healthy people and those with lung cancer. Myeloperoxidase is found in neutrophils, and in the lungs converts the tobacco hydrocarbon benzo [a]pyrene into a DNA-binding carcinogen. Myeloperoxidase also contributes to lung damage through the production of free radicals. ...
