GlaxoSmithKline, Vodafone Group plc, Global Alliance for Vaccine Immunization (GAVI) deal

The companies partnered to conduct a one-year pilot project in Mozambique to evaluate if mobile technology could increase childhood vaccination by an additional 5-10%. Mothers and caregivers will receive SMS alerts on the availability and importance of vaccinations as well as schedule vaccinations by SMS and receive notification of past and future vaccinations. Health workers will be provided with smartphones with software that will allow them to contact mothers, view and record vaccination histories, schedule vaccinations and report on follow-up visits. Healthcare facilities will report on vaccination stock levels by SMS. Vodafone will develop and integrate the technology and provide handsets to health workers. The pilot will include about 100 clinics. Vodafone said the companies are co-funding the project, but declined to disclose details. GSK could not be reached. ...
