Statins cardiovascular data

Researchers at the university reported data from a retrospective analysis of 255 patients who underwent heart transplantations from 1985-2007 and who survived at least 1 year post-transplantation showing that use of statins significantly reduced the risk of developing any cancer by 65% compared to non-use (p=0.0001). Additionally, the cumulative incidence of tumors 8 years post-transplantation was significantly lower in patients receiving a statin compared to patients not receiving a statin (13% vs. 34%, p=0.003), a benefit that persisted at 10 (18% vs. 39%) and 12 years post-transplantation (22% vs. 42%). The researchers also said statin use was associated with improved cancer-free survival and OS vs. non-use (p=0.0001 for both) and that the beneficial effect of statins on preventing cancer and reducing death from all causes was independent of patients' cholesterol levels.
