NIH researchers and the Laurel, Md., company reported that CMV may interact with the p53 cancer oncogene to cause restenosis after angioplasty.

Specimens from 60 patients who failed to maintain open coronary arteries after angioplasty were analyzed in Science; 23 (38 percent) had accumulated high amounts of the tumor suppressor protein p53, while none of 20 samples from patients who had not undergone angioplasty stained positive for the p53-specific antibodies.
