How TwinsUK yielded new insights into interplay between gut bugs and disease

A data dive into the TwinsUK registry based at King’s College London has revealed new associations between gut microbiota and disease, including some outside the usual suspects, like urinary incontinence. The study found not just positive but negative links to disease, and pinpointed microbial families to watch for some widely used therapeutics.

TwinsUK contains more than 25 years of health-related phenotype data from about 12,000 adult twins. Its advantage over other cohorts with gut microbiome data is that the higher age range means it contains higher prevalence of common diseases...
