How inflammasome activation mediates contrast agent-induced acute kidney injury

A University of Calgary team has implicated the inflammasome in acute kidney injury induced by contrast imaging agents and identified targets that could help prevent it.

In patients with diminished renal function, such as those with chronic kidney disease, diagnostic imaging with a contrast agent can exacerbate the dysfunction, sometimes leading to acute renal failure and cardiovascular events.
