TECHNOLOGY: SNPs

Genetic studies identified variants in the ESR2 and PPFIBP2 genes that could help predict the risk of prostate cancer in Asian populations. Meta-analysis of genome-wide association study data from a Japanese cohort of 1,583 prostate cancer patients and 3,386 unaffected controls, a Chinese cohort of 1,417 patients and 1,008 unaffected controls, and validation studies in two independent cohorts of Asian subjects, identified independent associations between the risk of the disease and two SNPs: the rs12791447 variant at 11p15.4 on the PPFIBP2 gene (p=3.59 x10-8), and the rs58262369 variant at 14q23.3 on the ESR2 gene (p=6.05 x10-10). Next steps could include validating the biomarkers in additional patient populations...
