Illumina to acquire Edico for $100M

Illumina Inc. (NASDAQ:ILMN) will acquire genome analytics company Edico Genome Inc. (La Jolla, Calif.) for $100 million.

SVP of Product Development Susan Tousi told BioCentury that Illumina will use Edico's DRAGEN Bio-IT Platform to accelerate secondary analysis of next generation sequencing data. DRAGEN can analyze a whole genome in about 25 minutes, compared with about 30 hours when using industry standard BWA-GATK-HC software (see BioCentury, July 21, 2014 & BioCentury Innovations, Feb. 14, 2018).

Edico's platform will be accessible through Illumina sequencers or on the cloud. Tousi said the company will work with cloud storage providers such as Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) to make Edico's pipelines available on Illumina's BaseSpace analysis platform.

Tousi said Illumina "will be working with the Broad Institute to advance standardization of analysis methods by accelerating the performance of their Genome Analysis Toolkit (GATK) on the DRAGEN platform."

Edico had raised $32 million in two rounds of venture funding, according to BioCentury's BCIQ database. Its investors included Dell Technologies Capital, Qualcomm Ventures, Axon Ventures and Greg Lucier.
