Gel for rapidly remineralizing tooth enamel

February 27, 2025 2:14 AM UTC

A glycerol-based gel containing calcium phosphate clusters could help rapidly remineralize teeth eroded by dental caries by preventing precipitation of calcium and phosphorus salts, enabling their incorporation into tooth structures.

In an acid-induced model of caries in extracted human teeth, application of the gel with a brush followed by immersion in artificial saliva remineralized the defect sites with calcium phosphate starting at 5 minutes, and formed full hydroxyapatite nanowires resembling normal enamel by 30 minutes, with no further change at 24 hours, whereas a paste similar to commercially available remineralizing agents showed little improvement in 30 minutes. ...
