Aurora Biosciences and collaborators published the crystal structure of a mutant form of the green fluorescent protein (GFP) from the jellyfish Aequorea victoria. GFP can be used as a marker for gene expression and protein localization.
The protein folds into an 11-stranded beta barrel structure, with the chromophore (color-producing cluster of atoms) forming from a central helix. Earlier studies have suggested that neighboring amino acid side chains interact with the chromophore to influence color. ...
