Mitokor and university collaborators demonstrated that Parkinson's is associated with a 20 percent reduction in the activity of complex I, a mitochondrial enzyme that initiates the production of cellular energy. Increased production of oxygen radicals also was seen in the mitochondria from Parkinson's patients, which were placed inside neuroblastoma cells whose own mitochondria were destroyed.
As published in the Annals of Neurology, the cells also are more sensitive to the toxin MPTP, which is known to induce Parkinson's-like damage by disrupting the mitochondrial oxygen transport chain. ...
