NEOP reported Phase III data showing high sensitivity of its RIGS method for finding metastasized colorectal cancer in the abdomen. As presented at the American College of Surgeons meeting in San Francisco, 100 of 144 patients given the RIGS radioactive tracer had one or more sites of disease that were confirmed by biopsy. The RIGS probe identified hidden tumor in 21 percent of patients who localized the monoclonal antibody bearing the tracer.

The technique proved especially valuable in finding liver and pelvic cancer missed at first by the surgeons. In 7 of 25 patients with liver metastases, RIGS found hidden disease outside the liver that was missed by CT or by surgical exploration. In 18 patients with no disease outside the liver, RIGS detected residual tumor at the margins of the surgical excision in 2 patients. Hidden tumor was found in 3 of 15 patients with disease in the pelvis, leading to further excision. ...
