GLIA published a preliminary report of a prospective trial in Europe of disc surgeries that used Adcon. As reported in the European Spine Journal, peridural scarring was reduced, and outcomes were better, when the gel was applied after surgery on the spine. Peridural fibrosis is a typical result of both laminectomy and discectomy, with an association between the scarring and post-operative pain.
Of 213 patients whose outcomes were analyzed in the report, 100 had received the gel. Evaluating physicians and patients were unaware of who had received the gel. At six-month follow-up, the number of patients who reported increased pain with daily activities (lifting, sitting, bending) was reduced by 50 percent.
