University researchers reported that a modified molecule missing the first eight amino acids of RANTES, a chemokine, can prevent HIV infection without inducing immune system activation. RANTES has been shown to work at the CCR-5 receptor to stop HIV entry into macrophages, but these natural molecules also are potent signaling agents that can induce chemotaxis, inflammation, and activation of leukocytes. ...
