AGPH updated results from two pilot Phase II studies of Viracept at the International Conference on Antiviral Research in Fukushima, Japan. In a 60-day study of 36 HIV-infected patients who received 500, 750 or 1,000 mg of Viracept three times a day plus standard doses of Zerit d4T, or Zerit alone, mean reductions in HIV were >98 percent in each Viracept group, versus 82 percent in patients receiving Zerit alone. During the study, mean CD4 counts increased from baseline by 105-130 cells in the combination groups, versus 72 cells in the Zerit monotherapy group.

In a study of 30 HIV-infected patients, Viracept was used as a monotherapy, at the same three dose levels. Patients had mean reductions in HIV of 95-99 percent at four weeks, and mean CD4 counts increased from baseline by 35-100 cells. In more than 20 patients who continued treatment for 16 weeks, mean reductions in HIV were 81-99 percent for the three dose groups; and mean CD4 counts increased from pretreatment levels by 115-170 cells. ...
