University researchers published the results of an experiment in which they expanded and grew normal liver cells in the presence of hepatocyte growth factor/scatter factor (HGF/SF), epidermal growth factor (EGF), and transforming growth factor alpha (TGFa), in the presence of a new chemically defined medium, hepatic growth medium (HGM).

The study, published in the Journal of Cell Biology, showed that mature hepatocytes can function as, or be a differentiated source of, hepatic stem cells, or hepatoblasts. ...
