ERGO research using mice with the ob/ob gene mutation shows that timed stimulation of two classes of dopamine receptors gave a 50-60 percent reduction in food intake (p<0.01), as well as dramatic weight loss (p<0.0001) and decreased fat stores of 22-32 percent (p<0.05), with no significant loss of muscle mass. The approach also improved glycemic control, reducing glucose by 57 percent and insulin by 50 percent.
The findings, presented at the meeting of the American Diabetes Association in San Francisco, were obtained without using the leptin protein, and the effect indeed may be more fundamental than leptin action, the researchers emphasized. ...
