Researchers from the Kimmel Cancer Cancer at Thomas Jefferson Medical College reported in Cell that they have identified a gene on chromosome 3, called FHIT (fragile histidine triad), which is particularly prone to instability. When altered, it is believed to lead to primary cancers of the esophagus, stomach and colon.

The tumor suppressor gene makes a small protein, probably an enzyme. Tumors that manifest abnormal FHIT genes arise from epithelial cell linings that are commonly directly exposed to environmental carcinogens. ...
