SBD, a new gene sequencing technique developed by Pharmacia Biotech, was more effective in detecting p53 status and determining prognosis of breast cancer than standard immunohistochemistry (IHC) in a study of 316 women with primary breast cancer.

SBD detected 23 cases of breast cancer with p53 mutations that were not found with IHC, indicating that IHC failed to detect 33 percent of the mutations. In addition, 19 of the IHC-positive tumors sequenced negative, giving the IHC method a 30 percent false-positive frequency. ...
