Women with a mutation in the p53 tumor suppressor gene had a poorer prognosis than women without the mutation, according to a study of 90 Caucasian women with breast cancer published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Recurrence and death correlated with the p53 mutation, as detected by a highly sensitive method, touch preparation. Of 32 women with the p53 mutation, 13 had recurrences of disease, and 10 died during the two-year follow-up period. Of the 58 patients without the mutation, only 7 relapsed and 2 died. ...
