University researchers reported that mice missing the gene for a regulatory subunit of the PKA enzyme stay lean despite high fat diets, and have low body fat on normal diets, due to higher production of heat by their brown fat. This type of fat is primarily thermoregulatory, and although it regresses in humans after infancy, it can be induced to proliferate.

It is still an open question whether the mouse findings will have relevance to humans, researcher Stanley McKnight told BioCentury. ...
