University researchers published in Science a means of stopping cell division in yeast by manipulating control of a cell cycle checkpoint at which chromosomes are sorted in preparation for cell division. The scientists manipulated this checkpoint by overexpressing a protein kinase called Mps1p. This altered the activity of another protein, Mad1p, and halted the cell cycle of normal cells but not checkpoint-defective cells. ...
