The National Center for Human Genome Research, part of the NIH, launched a pilot study to explore the feasibility of large-scale sequencing of human DNA. The initiative, which has a budget of $18 million in the first year and $60 million over three years, marks the start of the third phase of the Human Genome Project: sequencing the 3 billion bases of human DNA. The initiative, at six U.S. research centers, is projected to sequence about 3 percent of human DNA in the first two years.
If the pilot study is successful, the project will be scaled up, with the goal of sequencing the entire genome by 2005. ...
