Researchers from Meretek and university colleagues described in the American Journal of Gastroenterology clinical trials to detect H. pylori infection in 120 healthy asymptomatic subjects and 465 patients with duodenal ulcers. Urea is a chemical that the bacterium metabolizes into carbon dioxide expired by patients into a breath bag. 13C is a non-radioactive isotope.
As described in the American Journal of Gastroenterology, the presence of active H. pylori infection either before or after antimicrobial therapy was indicated by an increase of 2.4 percent in the abundance of breath 13CO2 measured 30 minutes after a 125 mg dose of 13C urea. ...
