University researchers and collaborators showed in Science that mice developed immunity after being fed raw transgenic potato, or being force-fed an extract of tobacco leaves expressing genes for a subunit of the E. coli enterotoxin. After four oral immunizations, serum antibodies and mucosal antibodies were produced that neutralized the biological activity of the toxin in mouse cells.
