GNE published a method to create analogs of polypeptides that retain the active sites, assembled on a compact scaffold. Phage display is used to screen systematic mutations of the hormone of interest. As reported in Science, atrial natriuretic peptide was reduced in size by the method from 28 amino acids to 15 while retaining a high potency of binding and biological action.

Previous analogs of the hormone have shown weaker potency, with at least 500 times less affinity for receptor binding. ...
