French researchers published in The Lancet the association of somatic cell nuclear transfer cloning with physiological defects that occur after birth. The authors generated a cloned calf from skin cells taken from an ear biopsy of a 15-day old calf that itself was a clone generated from an embryonic nucleus. The somatic cloned calf had a sudden drop in lymphocyte count and hemoglobin after 6 weeks of development, which was attributed to thymic atrophy and lymphoid hypoplasia, and the calf died on day 51 from severe anemia. ...
