Republican lawmakers call on Califf to reverse Mifeprex decision

126 members of Congress demand additional restrictions on access to abortion drug

In the first of what is likely to be a long series of disputes with FDA Commissioner Rob Califf over women’s reproductive health and other issues, 126 Republican members of Congress have requested that he reverse the agency’s decision to lift some restrictions on prescribing the abortion drug Mifeprex.

The letter, sent Feb. 18, follows a decision by most Republican senators to vote against Califf’s confirmation. Lobbying by pro-life advocacy groups played a strong role in the defection of Republicans who had backed Califf in 2016 when he was nominated by President Barack Obama to serve as FDA commissioner. ...
