Median seed, A round sizes have more than doubled since 2017 

2021 is turning out to be a bumper year, in particular for start-ups with new modalities

With less than half a year in the books, it’s clear that the 2021 crop of newcos is accelerating the trend of the past few years in drawing bigger rounds from investors to get their companies off the ground. A combination of new modalities and a growing investor base appear to be fueling the increase.

The war chests, rather than the overall activity, are on the rise, with a fairly steady stream of about 300 companies raising seed or series A rounds each year since 2017, but median raises have more than doubled  in that time. And against last year’s numbers, 2021 medians are up 40% and 75% for series A and seed rounds, respectively...
