With NCATS ‘ready,’ Austin readies to depart agency he built to join Flagship

A tireless advocate for translational science

After leading the National Center for Advancing Translational Medicine for nearly a decade, Christopher Austin is stepping down as director of the NIH group to become CEO-partner at Flagship Pioneering.

Austin has been the only permanent director of NCATS since its launch in 2012. He has been a tireless advocate for translational science, which the center defines as “improving the research process to get more treatments to more people more quickly.” Under Austin, NCATS has taken leading roles in NIH initiatives to repurpose drugs for new indications, develop test methods and predictive models, and design and implement innovative clinical trials. ...
