The Fort Lauderdale, Fla., company received a $100,000 Phase I Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) grant from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases to develop agents that limit the neutropenia associated with the use of AZT and other myelosuppressive anti-retroviral agents.

Andrx said myelosuppression is responsible for interruption of treatment in about 30 percent of patients taking AZT. Uridine has been shown to protect bone marrow cells from AZT-induced toxicity, the company said, but it is rapidly degraded and high doses produce toxic side effects. ...
