The Santa Clara company and its parent company, Affymax N.V. (AFMXF), published details of a new method for sequencing DNA. In the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the companies' researchers showed how photolithography can be applied to sequencing by hybridization.
Researchers used photolithographic techniques to generate miniaturized arrays of densely packed oligonucleotide probes. Those probe arrays, or DNA chips, were then applied to parallel DNA hybridization analysis. The technique, sequencing by hybridization (SBH), used a set of short oligonucleotide probes to search for complementary sequences on a long, target strand of DNA. The researchers said the technique, which is similar to the way in which silicon computer chips are constructed, can be used to automate much of the manual labor required by conventional DNA sequencing technology. ...
