CGNE described its cloning and expression of the plant gene for the key step in making long-chain fatty acids that are the precursors of waxes for various industrial uses.
The elongase gene is present in certain varieties of rapeseed (canola) but is missing in other varieties that were developed to be low in erucic acid. When CGNE expressed the elongase gene from jojoba in canola varieties normally having little long-chain fatty acid, the transgenic product gave seeds with more than 50 percent of the oil consisting of long-chain fatty acids, the Davis, Calif., company said at the International Congress of Plant Molecular Biology in Amsterdam. ...
