AIMM researchers and collaborators presented experiments elucidating the mechanism of action of oral tolerance, which enables the body to accept ingested foreign protein as food. AIMM is developing therapies employing this mechanism to treat autoimmune diseases, pursuing the prospect that the body is able to tolerize the immune system by consuming the targeted protein.
In Science, the researchers reported that the specific cells involved in oral tolerance were cloned by feeding mice myelin basic protein. Their T cells then were shown to produce TGF-beta, IL-4 and IL-10. ...
