The Houston company said it has produced commercial quantities of recombinant human lactoferrin, a natural antibacterial protein, through a fermentation process that uses genetically modified Aspergillus fungi.

Commercial development of human lactoferrin has not been feasible since low-cost pharmaceutical-grade material was unavailable, Agennix said. Research-grade lactoferrin purified from human milk can cost up to $2,500 per gram. ...
