DIAD presented results in a guinea pig model comparing its prodrug with Zovirax acyclovir. As discussed at the International Conference on Antiviral Research in Fukushima, Japan, the study compared the drugs on three parameters: number of sores, area of sores and virus titer (active live virus).

Each animal was infected with HSV-1 at four separate sites. Sites were treated on days one, two and three with either 5 percent Zovirax ointment, ointment control, DIAD's prodrug as a 1.2 percent aqueous cream, or cream control. Efficacy was evaluated on the fourth day. ...
