Researchers at the Albert Einstein School of Medicine (Bronx, N.Y.) and colleagues investigated the seeming contradiction that treatment of HIV with 3TC alone leads to a drug resistant mutation, while treatment with the drug for over 48 weeks is still associated with a lower plasma viral burden than at baseline.

They theorized that the mutation (an M184V substitution) might be accompanied by a sustained ability of the immune system to suppress viral replication. To test the idea, they compared 9 patients on 3TC to 9 receiving AZT. ...
