Berlex and collaborators reported that RAGE acts as a docking site for amyloid beta peptide, is present in increased amounts in brains from people who died with Alzheimer's disease, and could be a new target for drug development in the disease.

As detailed in Nature, a receptor that binds beta amyloid was isolated from lung, and shown to be identical to RAGE, which in the developing brain is involved in guiding the growth of neurons. The receptor appears to mediate the interaction of amyloid with the microglia cells, as well as with endothelial cells and neurons.
