NCI researchers presented positive data from a small study showing that Abelcet was successful in treating children with refractory and newly diagnosed hepatosplenic candidiasis (HSC) without kidney toxicity.
In the study, reported at the American Society for Microbiology Conference on Candida and Candidiasis in San Diego, Abelcet was given to 6 children with HSC, 5 of whom had failed antifungal therapy with free amphotericin B. The children received doses of 2.5 mg/kg/day for 6 weeks, for a total dosage of 105 mg/kg. There was no change in the patients' median serum creatinine levels (0.8 mg/dl) from start to end of therapy and serum creatinine remained low three months after treatment (0.6 mg/dl).
