The Glasgow, U.K., laboratory and university collaborators reported in Science that mice missing part of the gene for an inflammatory chemokine, MIP-1 alpha, do not develop the heart damage that can follow infection with Coxsackie-virus B3, a human pathogen.
Mice missing both copies of the gene did not develop endocarditis after infecion with the virus, whereas genetically normal controls had moderate to severe damage by day 10. ...
