The New Haven, Conn., company demonstrated effectiveness of the antibody, which prevents cleavage of the C5 complement protein, in two animal models of the kidney damage in lupus.

Inflammation, kidney damage, and mortality were all reduced by the antibody. The inhibitor prevented histologic and clinical development of nephritis in the model of acute and rapid progressive nephritis. ...
