University researchers and the South San Francisco company reported the sequence of the PC-1 gene, and found overproduction of the protein in fibroblasts from seven of nine patients with adult-onset diabetes. It was also at high levels in the skin cells from three of seven non-diabetic but insulin-resistant individuals.

As detailed in Nature, the protein, normally found in small amounts in many tissues, is a membrane glycoprotein. The researchers are not certain of its cellular role, suggesting that it may block the signaling pathway of the insulin receptor. ...
