SHM's research collaborators at Baylor College of Medicine have sequenced the gene for ps20, a protein that inhibits the growth of prostate cancer cells.
The protein mediates the activityof urogenital growth inhibitory factor (UGIF), another protein which plays a role in the proliferation and differentiation of prostate cancer cells. Reduced UGIF production may lead to poor cell differentiation that is associated with the progression of prostatic carcinomas, whereas the presence of UGIF activity may inhibit growth of poorly differentiated or abnormal cells. ...
