Data published in Nature indicate that NT-3 can spur sprouting of the largest nerve tract leading from the brain to the spinal cord, the cortical spinal tract (CST).
In adult rats, injection of NT-3, but not brain-derived neurotrophic factor ( BDNF), into injured spinal cords increased regenerative sprouting. Adding an antibody to an inhibitory protein, found in myelin, allowed long-distance regeneration of the tract. ...
